I recently had the pleasure of getting to know another amazing author and one I’m proud to call my friend.
I asked Alex how old he was when he wrote his first story. He said he was 7 or 8 and it was about a Sherlock Holmes style potato. I chuckled and he said it’s in my blood. My dad attended Yale and studied English with the great Harold Bloom. Dad and I used to go on long camping trips where he’d tell me stories he made up on the spot. When he’d get tired, I badly wanted the stories to continue, so I pushed on with them.
So who or what inspired you to write? I think it was Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, people like that. I told him I loved Shakespeare and he laughed and told me yes! Shakespeare as well. When I was 11 or so I read all of Hamlet into a tape recorder, doing all the parts ha ha ha. It was very, very dramatic. I wanted to be Lawrence Olivier.
So how many books have you written? I have written eight so far. With more to come I’m sure.
Is there anything you refuse to write about? There is nothing I won’t write about. the true horror is denial.
So what do you do for fun? I’m a bit of a workaholic. solace for the soul kind of thing. This did not surprise me as he is very intelligent and has a great sense of humor. I also listen to a lot of heavy metal, watch horror movies. Sleep. Eat. Read.
So when you aren’t writing what do you like to read? I read a lot of philosophy, comparative religion, weird fiction.
what is your favorite book you have written? The Doom Hippies is a collection of my short stories and poetry. It was on the Bram Stoker Recommended list. I’m very proud of it. Wow! That’s amazing! You should be very proud of that!!
So what are you working on now? Next week I’m releasing a collaboration with my good mate, Anthony Crowly, in Birmingham, UK, called Sickest Things. Let me tell you the cover gave me the creeps! Watch for it!
Alex lives in Claifornia and grew up there. He was an only child. He isn’t married but used to have a dog named Trolley that he loved.
What is your dream? Famous writer? He chuckled and said well it used to be that I would meet my true love when she showed up at a book signing, doe eyed and shyly asking for an autograph but now I want to entertain people with my work. And maybe some of the darker stuff can be cathartic and healing for those who’ve been down tougher roads than most.
Then he told me this. Ok, a few final words. I write horror because I hate cruelty and denial. Bad things happen; people are hurt and Their voices silenced. I want to raise awareness of issues like child abuse, war and the destruction of our environment, but do it, hopefully, in an artistic way that is also entertaining and joyful. I want to be a source of courage, hope and good will. People who wish to contact me can do so at Trolleydogs@aol.com, through my Facebook account and on Twitter at Metallexica.
