Getting personal with Rob Hooper

Rob Hooper is a very talented artist. He has tons of drawings for you to see on his website and you should go check that out.  He is a super nice man who I have enjoyed getting to know. He has several adult gentleman’s coloring books available on Amazon. They are very tastefully done and are amazing. Please take some time and get to know him you won’t be sorry. I would like to introduce you to Rob Hooper…..

1. How old were you when you first wrote your first story?

I started drawing comics at about 15, but several years after I had I started drawing. I have always been able to draw from what I can recall…

2. How many books have you written?

I have submitted short comic stories for collective comics before now, but currently have 2 colouring books on amazon as well as an art book of pinups. The Gentleman’s GOTH colouring book will be my 3rd colouring book, but the first that will be handled through a publisher. There are 3 more Colouring Books in the pipeline, one for the ladies and laddies that like laddies, and 2 more Pinup Books for the moment.

3. Anything you won’t write about?

Never really thought about that. No porn, there is enough of that around. No violence against women, children and animals unless I can use it as a message for change for the good.

4. Tell me about you. Age (if you don’t mind answering), married, kids, do you have another job etc…

I’m 57, I am divorced and currently single. I have 3 kids: Nic, Tim and Emma. Nic is 32, Tim is 30 and Emma is 17. All from the same mom. I am a full-time illustrator and the idea of publishing my practice drawings as art books is kind of my second job! I also have many interests like friends, music, air-cooled VW Beetles, reading, discussion groups, movies, running, which limit my time for any other work.

5. What’s your favorite book you have written?

I am most proud of my Pinups Art Book.

6. Who or what inspired you to write?

An old family friend suggested that I start drawing cartoons because I was always a bit of a clown and loved hamming it up to an audience.

7. What do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy discovering new people, places and things to do. I was taught by a past creative director of mine to explore life as much as I can to broaden my abilities as an art director. The more you know, the better you are at your craft.

8. Any traditions you do when you finish a book?

I can only relate this to making breakeven each month. What I like to do in that case is take a day off if deadlines are not too tight and see a movie, get a de-stress massage with my good friend Laura (No, that’s not a euphemism for anything for something else! 😉 )

9. Where do you write? Quite or music?

I do concept work in silence and finished art either listening to an audio book or with music.

10. Anything you would change about your writing?

I am always trying to improve my skills. The internet has exposed me to the brilliance of the younger artists around the world and I am constantly inspired and depressed by it!!! As I am getting older I find my eyesight isn’t as good as it used to be, so I am using new software for inking which has opened up all sorts of possibilities! I want to be the best I can be under my own steam, but I don’t want to become obsessed by my craft. To many people today are defined by what they do for a living. That’s not healthy in my estimation.

11. What is your dream? Famous writer?

I’m living my dream at the moment. I know that might sound arrogant but I am content with my life as it is. I made decisions in the past to reach for quality of life and not to chase money in the corporate world, and I am glad I did. I will just keep doing this until I fall off the perch or get shot by a jealous husband at about 90.

12. Where do you live?

I live in Johannesburg South Africa in a quiet suburb sandwiched between a gold course and a large park. I see tons of bird life and trees, and the occasional person. Love it!

13. Pets?

I love animals but don’t subscribe to anything living in captivity. 😀

14. What’s your favorite thing about writing?

I can do what I like when I like. I apparently have a problem with authority! 😉

I’m not just a pinup artist!
